SCIENTIFIC DATA PROCESSING PROGRAMMER VCRGE/WIPAC/WIPAC Madison
The IceCube Observatory is the largest neutrino telescope currently operating on Earth. It consists of 5160 optical sensors buried down to 2.5 km deep in the Antarctic ice shelf and arranged in a volume of 1 km3, and 324 optical sensors deployed in a surface array for high-energy cosmic ray detection. IceCube science goals are the identification of high energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin and characterization of high energy cosmic rays. Since its completion, in December 2010, IceCube has collected an unprecedented amount of data, which are being used to send real time alerts to other observatories under an elaborated multi-messenger program aimed to identify the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays ever observed. With 2500 events detected each second, IceCube produces nearly 1 TB of data each day, with 100 GB transferred over satellite to the UW data center. These data are processed through sophisticated and time-consuming reconstruction algorithms in a distributed computing environment, aimed to identify the about 1 neutrino-induced event every 1 million produced by cosmic rays. At the same time, large volumes of simulated detector data are produced for data analysis and interpretation. Prompt processing of both is necessary to guarantee streamlined data analysis and publication of physics results. This processing utilizes numerous computing clusters and grid systems across the world (e.g. Open Science Grid, TeraGrid, and Xsede). The principal duties of this position consist of developing and maintaining software for fast data processing throughout the distributed computing system, as well as developing tools to monitor and validate this processing by performing analyses of physics observables in experimental and simulated data.
