Degree and area of specialization:

Bachelor's degree required. Computer Sciences or related field preferred. Consideration will be given to degree in another field plus relevant computer/database programming experience.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

One (1) or more years of relevant experience as described in this PVL is required. Prefix assignment determined by years of relevant experience. A minimum of seven (7) years of post-graduate, professional work experience is required for appointment at the senior level.

Successful candidate must have demonstrable ability to develop web applications and write SQL, as well as a solid understanding of relational databases.

Preferred qualifications include:
- Experience working with Ruby, PHP, JavaScript, HTML, CSS
- Expertise in modern web frameworks (preferably Rails)
- Strong understanding of object-oriented design and programming
- Practical agile development lifecycle experience
- Ability to build automated tests to support development and ensure high quality software
- Experience with version control systems and team software development (preferably Git)
- Basic working knowledge of Linux command line including ability to setup local development environments

Position Summary:

Exciting opportunity for a talented, motivated, and team-oriented application developer to join the expanding Software Development and Informatics (SDI) team at the Department of Medicine. Play a critical role in the success of a diverse portfolio of research, clinical, educational, and administrative projects, creating custom software solutions that assist researchers, faculty and staff in the capturing, reporting and analysis of data.

The Department of Medicine (DOM) advances the health of the people of Wisconsin and beyond through high quality, patient- centered care, innovative research and education of the next generation of physicians. DOM is the largest academic department at UW-Madison, including over 1,200 employees and volunteer appointees across 15 clinical divisions, engaged in a wide range of clinical, educational, research and administrative activities.

This position reports to the Director of Software Development and Informatics (SDI) and works with the SDI team, Network and Server team and DOM helpdesk team within Medicine IT. The DOM is committed to professional development and can provide resources to help further develop technical skills and knowledge.

The SDI team provides a critical role in the success of a diverse portfolio of research, clinical, educational, and administrative projects, creating custom software/technology solutions to assist researchers, faculty and staff in the capturing, reporting and analysis of data. In addition to DOM, the SDI team works with several centers including the Wisconsin Alzheimer's Institute and Wisconsin Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, and is involved in several multi-site research project grants.
