Depending on Qualifications

Degree and area of specialization:

Minimum of BA / BS required. Degree and/or experience in the following areas preferred: psychology, substance abuse treatment, social work, public health, or health care.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

- At least 6 months of experience in human subjects and/or health services research is preferred, preferably with mental health focus.
- At least 12 months experience working in health care and/or research preferred.
- Experience in Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (AODA), criminal justice system, or psychology areas preferred.
- Knowledge base relevant to mental health, addictions, and health services research preferred.
- Experience with IRB protocols and data management preferred. Prefer demonstrated skill in assisting in the preparation of IRB protocols and manuscripts for publication.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow a scientific protocol required.
- Knowledge of research confidentiality/privacy issues is preferred.
- Current knowledge/experience of UW regulations and procedures is helpful but not required.
- Strong knowledge of computer fundamentals is required.

Prefix assignment and salary will be determined by qualifications and years of relevant experience. A minimum of 7 years of post-graduate, professional work experience is required for appointment at the senior level.

Position Summary:

The Research Specialist will be a member of Dr. Randy Brown's research team, working directly with study team members and research subjects. Current projects include human subjects research involving addicted and at-risk patients in hospital and primary care settings, opioid risk assessments among victims of traumatic injury, risk management strategies for opioid prescribing in primary care settings and pharmacies, and services to prevent injection related complications among people who inject drugs.

Additional Information:

- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills are very important, given that research includes discussing sensitive issues with subjects.
- Flexibility and willingness to work early mornings as needed is required.
- Ability to travel to and work at multiple locations is required.
- Ability to adapt to different work environments is required.
- Ability to work independently using initiative and good judgment is desired.

Position is expected to be staffed at 100% FTE but a lower FTE is negotiable. If the position is filled at less than 100%, the incumbent may be asked to increase to a higher FTE than initially assigned depending on program funding and need.
