Degree and area of specialization:

Applicants must either have a PhD in a relevant science-related field, or a DVM (or equivalent) from an AVMA accredited program and a MS or PhD in a relevant science related field.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Significant experience as gauged by advanced training in bacteriology is required, with a minimum of two years of training and/or work experience in the area of, or including the area of diagnostic bacteriology of animal species. Work/training experience within an American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) accredited veterinary diagnostic laboratory is ideal. Minimum of 2 years of staff supervision experience is preferred, as is experience with quality assurance programs.

The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to work with colleagues, technical staff, and laboratory customers and stakeholders in a positive, engaging, and professional manner.

Position Summary:

The Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (WVDL) is a high volume laboratory that provides a broad range of veterinary diagnostic testing services to approximately 2,500 clients. The principal objective is to provide animal disease testing services to veterinarians across the State of Wisconsin and the country.

The WVDL works closely with an array of entities and has allegiances and obligations that include the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA); the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protections, Division of Animal Health (DATCP); the National Wildlife Health Center (USGS); the Division of Public Health of the Department of Health Services (DHS); the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR): the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH); the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM); the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD); and the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA). These alliances provide for cooperation and information transfer as each organization pursues its mission. The WVDL is a National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) Core Laboratory and therefore is a part of our national defense against livestock disease disasters. A significant part of WVDL's work involves surveillance testing for the USDA and DATCP, as well as extensive testing for the national livestock genetics industry, much of which is located in Wisconsin. In addition, testing is performed in support of Wisconsin's fish industry. The WVDL has laboratories located in Madison and Barron, Wisconsin.?

Additional Information:

This position is within the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (WVDL), which was established in 1999 by Wisconsin Act 107 (1999 Senate Bill 358), enacted on April 28, 2000. The purpose was to provide an excellent resource primarily for animal agriculture related diagnostics. Effective July 1, 2000, the Wisconsin Animal Health Laboratory was transferred from the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection to the University of Wisconsin System and renamed the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. This change occurred through the collaborative efforts of the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WMVA), the School of Veterinary Medicine, and the State of Wisconsin. Continued support from the State and UW campus, along with increasing demand for diagnostics of exceptional quality, led to the design and construction of a new laboratory on the UW-Madison campus. The current state-of-the-art facility on Easterday Lane opened its doors in 2006.
