Degree and area of specialization:

Bachelor's degree in public relations, journalism, communications or a related field. Master's degree in a science discipline or a related field is preferred. Experience in science writing is preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Minimum of four years professional experience working in journalism, public relations or a position requiring strong written and verbal communications skills (or an equivalent combination of education and experience). In addition, the successful candidate must demonstrate:

* Ability to develop messages and communicate scientific material in a concise, clear and accessible manner using a broad range of platforms to varied audiences.
* Ability to determine the most effective tools to communicate, with an emphasis on social media.
* Well-developed media relations skills.
* Organizational skills to lead the planning and execution of multiple projects.
* Attentiveness to detail and adherence to all deadlines.
* The ability to work productively and successfully with diverse people and groups.

Position Summary:

This position will report to the Assistant Director for Communications of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Aquatic Sciences Center (ASC), which administers two statewide programs of multidisciplinary research, education and outreach dedicated to the protection and sustainable use of the Great Lakes, inland surface waters and groundwater resources. Serving as a science communicator the primary position responsibilities include producing a wide variety of information on Great Lakes and water resources topics and ASC activities for social media platforms, news releases, magazine articles, fact sheets, websites, booklets and other communications vehicles and preparing and participating in preparation of special ASC projects.
