Degree and area of specialization:

Master's degree or equivalent required in relevant discipline. Relevant disciplines include: public health, epidemiology, social sciences, public policy, evaluation research, communications, strategic planning or related field. Level of appointment will be contingent on relevant work history.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Candidates with the following characteristics are preferred:

Knowledge of injury and violence prevention, as well as primary and secondary prevention preferred.

Knowledge of and ability to utilize epidemiological concepts, principles, practices, and methods for surveillance, control, and/or prevention of disease preferred.

Knowledge of data, information systems, and community planning methodologies to identify the health status of a population preferred.

Knowledge of principles of program planning, implementation, evaluation preferred.

Experience in conducting evaluation preferred.

Extensive computer skills using database and statistical software (Excel, SAS, SPSS, STATA, Access), Web applications and IT systems, and advanced software for display and mapping of epidemiologic data (e.g., ArcGIS). Experience in data analysis (preferably using SAS) and in applying analysis and research to policy and program development in public health.

Experience conducting disease or other epidemiological surveillance and research in public health.

Experience in producing effective reports for public health audiences, policy-makers, and the public.

Experience analyzing administrative data, case review data, child welfare data, and survey data preferred.

Ability to translate analytic findings for use by professional public health and community audiences. Knowledge or experience in data visualization best practices.

Ability to connect research/analytic results to programs and policies.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Position Summary:

This position will design epidemiologic investigations and public health surveillance of Injury and Violence Prevention topics (e.g., intimate partner/sexual violence, child abuse and neglect, traumatic brain injury, and motor vehicle crash, older adult falls, suicide, homicide, drowning). The position will also contribute to evaluation of current Wisconsin Injury and Violence Prevention strategies. The position will be housed at the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.

Some travel within Wisconsin is required, and candidate must be qualified to drive and/or able to provide own means of transportation.
