Degree and area of specialization:

PhD in public policy/affairs, economics, sociology, social work or related field required.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
1. Minimum of five years experience related to social policy research, administration, supervision, policy, or practice in a governmental, policy research or practice, or university setting.
2. Knowledge of federal and state social welfare policy.
3. Experience collaboratively managing projects within a team environment, including experience setting goals, balancing priorities, managing budgets, and managing against deadlines.
4. Proven written communication skills, including the ability to summarize and interpret a wide range of research reports and results.
5. Proven verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex ideas succinctly to a wide range of audiences.
6. Ability to build and sustain external relationships and coordinate the efforts of multiple partners toward a common goal.
7. Ability to supervise research, editorial, and administrative staff.
8. Travel required (average of six trips per year, out of state).

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Five years experience related to social policy research, policy or practice.
2. Three years experience in a university/academic unit.
3. Knowledge of programs and research specifically related to the causes and consequences of poverty and inequality at the local, state, and national levels.
4. Knowledge of research methods ranging from implementation analysis to experimental policy evaluation.
5. Experience responding to requests for information regarding specific policies and programs, as well as related research, on a timely basis, paying attention to detail and offering recommendations when requested.
6. Experience listening to and then translating senior management research priorities into work plans reflecting those priorities.
7. Experience working within the state or federal public policy environment.

Position Summary:

This position, which reports to the Director of the Institute for Research on Poverty (IRP), will serve as IRPs Associate Director-Programs and Management. The position requires both administrative/managerial and research responsibilities. The candidate will have direct responsibility for overseeing IRPs day-to-day operations. IRPs integrated program of research, training, and dissemination is designed to effectively build and apply research evidence on key policy questions and develop a broad and diverse cadre of researchers addressing poverty and low-income populations. The candidate will work closely with IRPs Director and Associate Director-Research and Training to establish, develop, and manage IRPs strategic planning, research, budgetary, and dissemination activities, including providing timely information to researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and the public through the dissemination of a range of publications and multi-media products, as well as IRP-facilitated conferences and workshops. The candidate will also have primarily responsibility for supervising key research, administrative, and editorial staff, including IRPs Research Specialist, Payroll and Benefits Specialist, University Grants and Contracts Specialist, and additional research staff.
