Degree and area of specialization:

Bachelor or Master Degree in Microbiology, Biology, Bacteriology, or related field.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Bachelor's degree with at 3 or more years' experience working in a biological laboratory setting. preferred. Minimum of 3 years' experience using flow cytometry instrumentation, cell sorting experience microscopy experience is required, fluorescence microscopy is preferred. Experience with MS Office programs, experience working with Excel as an electronic database preferred. Experience using aseptic technique, experience working with level 2 pathogens preferred. Familiarity with hazardous material shipment is preferred.

License or Certificate:

Ability to pass a visual color screening test is required. Ability to sit at a microscope for extended period of time.

Position Summary:

This position serves the Flow Cytometry Unit and is assigned to the Environmental Health Division. The microbiologist will be expected to apply flow cytometric methods to prepare precisely-quantified parasite samples both for an ISO-accredited proficiency testing (PT) program and for laboratories using these standards for both quality control materials and to support efforts to develop new methods for the detection of waterborne pathogens. The position provides technical support in the form of consultation and training for cytometric assays to other scientists within the State Laboratory of Hygiene and the UW Madison research community. The position requires prior experience with flow cytometric instrumentation, excellent troubleshooting skills, fluorescence microscopy experience and knowledge of biological safety procedures. Active involvement in other aspects of public health research at the Hygiene Laboratory is expected and may include projects that have environmental and clinical components. Candidates should have a firm understanding of laboratory quality assurance. The microbiologist may be expected to generate, summarize and analyze research data for subsequent peer review and presentation.

The person must use effective team skills to contribute to the efficient operation of the work unit and the organization.
