|Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
A minimum of 3 years of professional molecular test development, veterinary microbiology, diagnostics, tissue cell culture and/or serology testing. Supervisory experience is preferred.

This position is responsible for the overall management and operation of the technical work units (bacteriology and serology) of the Barron laboratory. Tasks include: 1) supervision of microbiologists and technical support staff, 2) planning and control of unit resources to ensure laboratory services of the highest quality are provided to meet the needs of our customers, 3) organizing and leading Barron staff meetings, and 4) working cooperatively with other key managers/supervisors in the WVDL. Additionally, the position participates in the WVDL Administrative Team, professional development activities, and the promotion of Quality Assurance practices. This position reports to the Section Head of Microbiology. The supervisor also consults with and may receive direction from Pathology/Toxicology DVM staff and the Section Head of Virology.

Responsibilities involve work planning, work assignments, management of staff and evaluation of test results. Additionally, this position will use data collection tools in which the results will be used for decision making to carry out new assignments such as test development or modification. The position is responsible for maintaining and evaluating quality control, training staff in new test procedures and training or overseeing training of new employees and existing staff. The person in the position will oversee the selection of media, reagents, supplies and equipment, assist in case review and ordering of appropriate tests. The incumbent must be familiar with bacteriology, serology and other microbiological diagnostic techniques.
50% Manage the Barron Location Testing Laboratories
Administer overall operation of the Barron technical areas of laboratory units to ensure work is in alignment with WVDL vision/mission, goals, and needs of each work unit; oversee the enforcement of all policies and programs within the section including maintaining National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) certification; monitor workloads and productivity to assure that necessary resources are available and allocated appropriately to accomplish division and program goals; ensure client turnaround times are met; oversee and ensure that analytical techniques used by staff are in accordance with established SOPs; assess direct and indirect costs for testing and price setting; oversee the enforcement of all policies and practices designed to provide a safe work environment; perform duties relative to personnel activities including supervision, preparing position descriptions, managing staff performance evaluations; monitoring staffing needs; assignment of work schedules and leave approval; conduct periodic staff meetings for each work unit; oversee staff test interpretation and reporting; assure adequate inventories of reagents and equipment to meet workload projections; investigate complaints and incidents within the Barron Laboratory; develop, maintain and implement a training plan and related records for section staff; assure compliance with standards set by AAVLD, NPIP and other regulatory agencies; perform bacterial culture and serological tests to cover workload as needed.
15% Quality Control/Quality Assurance
Maintain working knowledge of standard operating procedures (SOP); understand, follow and enforce WVDL Quality programs; support and encourage the Quality Management System throughout WVDL; participate in the annual Management Review of the quality system; ensure that laboratory quality control procedures are being followed by conducting periodic audits of ongoing work; participate in all aspects of internal and external auditing events as necessary, including the AAVLD accreditation site visit; manage lab wide equipment activities including repairs, calibrations and documentation of these activities into the electronic quality management systems for pipettes, centrifuges, liquid handlers, balancers; initiate non-conformances, participate in CAR/PAR activities and problem solve as part of the improvement process; direct the review and updating of SOPs to ensure procedures are in accordance with advances in methods; manage proficiency and competency activities for section staff.
10% In collaboration with WVDL management, develop and evaluate laboratory methods and procedures.
Oversee the design, development, validation and implementation of new or existing methods and procedures for the Barron laboratory; oversee the evaluation and qualification of new reagents for use in the testing process; oversee the instruction of technical staff in the development of new methods; ensure that UW Office of Biological safety requirements for WVDL activities are met; validate and optimize existing procedures for the isolation of DNA from clinical samples and PCR tests; develop, validate, and implement new SOPs related to molecular diagnostic or serological tests to conform to AAVLD standards.
10% Other duties as assigned by WVDL Management
Plan and/or conduct special projects, including experiments and studies; serve on a variety of WVDL, UW and other external committees, sometimes in a leadership capacity; participate in the WVDL Administrative Team as well as the lab management team.
10% Client Communication
Actively participate in client outreach and communication efforts for the Barron laboratory; assist clients in submitting appropriate samples and selecting the appropriate diagnostic or surveillance tests, and aid in the interpretation of test results; manage client inquiries and requests; work with clients on testing that may be in development; prepare outreach and website material for client use.
5% Professional Growth
Review current literature for new techniques and procedures to aid in the diagnosis of animal diseases; plan and/or conduct special projects, including experiments and studies; participate at national or regional meetings concerned with diagnostic microbiology.
