Degree and area of specialization:

Degree not required. A Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent is preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Healthcare and/or laboratory setting experience preferred. Previous experience in program development and implementation of procedures and processes for Radiation Safety Program (RSP). Experience establishing radiation safety standards to ensure the health and safety of personnel who work with or who may be exposed to radiation either as a patient, as a member of the general public, or hospital staff.

Highly qualified applicants will possess:

Familiarity with the following areas encountered in an academic medical center:
Research vivarium facility
Industrial hygiene
Biological hazards and controls
Chemical hazards
Isotope production
PET/CT/MRI safety
Radiation Oncology
Operating room environment and sterile technique
Radiation environmental monitoring
Radio-pharmacy/cyclotron
Isotope production

Knowledge of the principles and procedures of radiation safety for the State of Wisconsin DHS to effectively collaborate with PIs, AUs, researchers and other radiation workers to ensure compliance.

Knowledge of medical procedures (diagnostic and therapeutic) that involve radiation and radioactive materials.

Knowledge of compliance with laws and standards set by the NRC, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), DOT, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), The Joint Commission, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the State of Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS).

Ability to work within and outside department to solicit feedback and input on program practices to improve compliance, efficiency, and ease of implementation.

Abiltiy to do advanced background screening including U.S. Department of Justice FBI criminal history records check and clearance through the UW Health and UW-Madison ROs.

License or Certificate:

Possess a valid WI State driver's license (can be obtained within two months of employment if the incumbent is from out-of-State).

Position Summary:

This individual will report directly into the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO). The RSO may delegate oversight of activities to the Hospital Assistant Radiation Safety Officer. The Environmental Health Specialist (EHS) plays a key role in program development and implementation of procedures and processes for UW-Madison and UW Health Radiation Safety Program (RSP). The RSP establishes radiation safety standards to ensure the health and safety of personnel who work with or who may be exposed to radiation either as a patient, as a member of the general public, or hospital staff. The EHS integrates regulatory requirements and best practices with results from field observations into programmatic actions. The EHS must ensure that radiation exposure to staff members, members of the public and the environment are As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA). The EHS works as an integral part of the RSP. The EHS is expected to regularly communicate with other members of UW-Madison EH&S and UW Health Safety, as well as members of hospital staff in clinical and research areas.
