|Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
At least one year of college/university student services, advising and/or administrative experience required. Demonstrated high level of cultural competency and success working with students. Knowledge of issues of equity and diversity in educational settings. Ability to work effectively with university-wide student support units, campus academic support staff and external stakeholders. Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills are essential. Experience and confidence in advising underrepresented students from an array of diverse backgrounds including those who are first-generation college students and/or students from economically diverse backgrounds and/or students with disabilities. Ability to effectively advise in course and major selection, financial literacy, professional development and transitional issues. Availability to work evenings and weekends as necessary is required.
Undergraduate Academic Advising
-Provide intensive one-on-one and group academic advising to help assigned advisees navigate the success pathway from admission to graduation.
- Advise CeO scholars in course selection, choosing a major, identification of resources, financial literacy and post-graduation planning.
-Monitor students' academic progress.
-Follow-up with students on academic probation and assist them in the development of an academic improvement plan.
-Facilitate a culture of inclusion and professionalism that fosters student success.
-Understand, interpret, and implement academic policies and procedures in all aspects of job performance.
-Assist students with interpreting DARS (Degree Audit Reporting System) reports, understanding major and degree requirements, as well as the policies of the schools and colleges, and majors.
-Interact effectively with academic departments including consultation with university advisors, administrators and faculty.
-Assist students with problem solving and crisis intervention. Make appropriate referrals to campus and community resources.
-Develop, plan, and implement programs such as workshops, panel discussions, guest speakers, etc. that focus on student success or one or more specialty areas including but not limited to STEM, financial literacy, career, mentoring, student recognition, family engagement, and graduate school preparation.
-Participate in full range of CeO activities, including orientation, graduation receptions, programs, presentations and outreach activities including selected evenings and weekends.
-Facilitate academic support with referrals to faculty office hours, tutoring, and other campus resources.
-Maintain confidential student records in compliance with federal and institutional guidelines.
-Track and communicate progress toward degree requirements using online records systems.
-Prepare, compile and submit all required advising, and other reports.
-Monitor the effectiveness of service to assigned caseload by assessing, evaluating and documenting the quality of student engagement, overall student progress, and outcomes.
-Evaluate and document the effectiveness, outcomes, and quality of assigned center-wide duties relative to programming and support services.
-Work collaboratively as a team member and contribute to the planning and operation of the center.
-Utilize and align office-administered assessment instruments with the academic success plans of students.
-Conduct performance self-evaluations and contribute to overall unit and campus assessments and evaluations as requested.
Complete all other duties as assigned.
Additional knowledge and skills preferred:
-Two to three years of full-time work experience in college advising or counseling, student services, orientation, student affairs, housing/residence life, counseling, enrollment management or other related areas.
-Knowledge of university policies and procedures, electronic advising tools, and campus/community resources.
-Previous work experience with TRIO programs (Talent Search, Upward Bound, Student Support Services, or McNair) or programs that serve similar populations.
-Technical skills in database, presentation, scheduling, spreadsheets and word processing software, web forms and related tools.
-Experience working with the Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS) and Student Information System (SIS) or similar tools.
-Ability to collaborate and connect with campus partners including schools and colleges, registrar, dean of students, career services, admissions, financial aid, health services, housing, and academic support services.
-Outstanding interpersonal skills as well as a commitment to helping scholars achieve personal and academic excellence.
-Special consideration will be given to applicants who have backgrounds similar to TRIO participants, or who have overcome barriers similar to those confronting program participants.
