Degree and area of specialization:

Required: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree (e.g. VMD, BVSc) and an advanced degree in a relevant field of study such as MS, MPH, MBA.
Desirable: Advanced training in one of the diagnostic disciplines, a Ph.D., and/or board certification in a laboratory-related specialty.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Required: Five years of veterinary diagnostic laboratory or relevant work experience (could include practice management, regulatory/policy, finance or quality management) and five years directing/supervising experience. Preferred applicants will also possess leadership and administrative skills including an aptitude for organizational and personnel development, fiscal management, team building, and customer service. The incumbent must possess excellent written and oral communication skills and have the ability to work with colleagues, technical staff, laboratory customers, the public, and state and federal agencies in a collegial, professional and productive manner.

License or Certificate:

License (or eligibility to obtain a license) to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Wisconsin and USDA Veterinary Accreditation Type II (or eligibility to obtain) is required.

Position Summary:

The Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (WVDL) is a high volume AAVLD accredited laboratory that provides a broad range of veterinary diagnostic testing services to approximately 2,500 clients. The principal objective is to provide animal disease testing services to veterinarians across the State of Wisconsin and the country.

The WVDL works closely with an array of entities and has allegiances and obligations that include the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA); the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protections, Division of Animal Health (DATCP); the National Wildlife Health Center (USGS); the Division of Public Health of the Department of Health Services (DHS); the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR): the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH); the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM); the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD); and the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA). These alliances provide for cooperation and information transfer as each organization pursues its mission. The WVDL is a National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) Core Laboratory and therefore is a part of our national defense against livestock disease disasters. A significant part of WVDL's work involves surveillance testing for the USDA and DATCP, as well as extensive testing for the national livestock genetics industry, much of which is located in Wisconsin. In addition, testing is performed in support of Wisconsin's fish industry.

This position serves as the Director of the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (WVDL), part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The successful applicant is responsible for implementing the laboratory's mission to promote animal and human health and the vitality of the State and National agricultural economy through the delivery of high-quality veterinary diagnostics and exemplary customer service. Located on the campus of the world-renowned UW-Madison, the WVDL is a state-of-the-art laboratory for diagnostic services, research, and development and serves diverse groups ranging from industry, regulatory agencies, and the University of Wisconsin to the local community, animal owners, and veterinarians throughout the U.S. The laboratory includes sections of microbiology, virology, and pathology/toxicology/chemistry/TSE testing and has significant client outreach services as well as a branch laboratory in Barron, WI.
