Degree and area of specialization:

B.S. in Computer Science, or B.S. in Physics or related field with significant experience in computing

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

REQUIRED
-Experience with Python development.
-Experience with C++ and BOOST on large distributed software projects in a Linux/UNIX computing environment.
-Experience working in a team development environment including the use of code development tools such as CMake, Subversion, and Git.
-Experience working in distributed computing and grid computing, including networking fundamentals and remote procedure calls.
-Experience with SQL and database programming. Familiarity with principles of rational database design.
-Software development life cycle activities including requirements gathering, design documentation and reviews.
-Excellent communication skills and ability to support users with varying levels of expertise.

PREFERRED
-A broad range of both software and hardware skills based on solid experience in a Linux/UNIX computing environment.
-Experience working in a scientific or research environment.
-Familiarity with graphical user interface development including toolkits such as Gtk and Qt.
-Experience with remote troubleshooting of software and hardware.
-Experience with Web development in HTML, PHP and Javascript.

Position Summary:

The University of Wisconsin is an institution with an international reputation for excellence in physical sciences research and education. This position will support the Wisconsin IceCube Particle and Astrophysics Center (WIPAC) and its mission which includes leading the construction and operation of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory located at the South Pole. The observatory consists of 5160 optical sensors buried up to 2.5 kilometers deep in the Antarctic ice along with data handling and computing equipment located on-site and at the South Pole.
