Animal biologics are molecules or tissues that are derived from the harvest of livestock and poultry for food. Therefore, animal biologics are co-products that add value and efficiency to the meat industry. Many animal biologics are used in animal and human health, e.g., heparin and extracellular matrix. This field of inquiry has huge potential for creative identification of biologics that cannot be synthesized using biotechnology. Animal biologics is grounded in the pillars of sustainability -- environmental conservation, social benefit and economic development. Also, this position is aligned with the new, $50 million Meat Science and Animal Biologics Discovery building, built with public, private and corporate financial support. This position has unique responsibilities in a new research field in a new building. The position includes research, instruction and outreach components. The successful candidate will develop a novel, extramurally funded research program in Animal Biologics through competitive federal funding from USDA, other federal agencies, Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer Research programs, and sponsored research agreements with industry partners.
