Position Summary:

This position is primarily responsible for overseeing the Reserve's Research Program; coordinating and conducting high caliber research, implementing the Reserve's research strategy and meeting the goals and objectives on priority coastal issues detailed in the Reserve's five-year management plan. The specific priority coastal issues identified for the next five years are 1) climate change, 2) water quality and healthy coastal ecosystems and 3) resilient communities and strengthened sense of place. The Research Coordinator supports local research needs as they arise and ensures that the Research Program aligns with the national research strategy for the Reserve System. The Research Coordinator works closely with the Monitoring Coordinator to support the System Wide Monitoring Program, Sentinel Site program, and additional long-term data collection efforts. The position integrates with and supports the Reserve's other core sectors: Coastal Training, Stewardship, and Education. This position increases public awareness of the Lake Superior Reserve, Extension, and UW-Madison, plus related programs and builds support for these programs among the public, legislators, beneficiaries, and constituents.

The Research Coordinator conducts and fosters high quality applied estuarine and coastal system research focused on the St. Louis River estuary and western Lake Superior watersheds. High quality research in this context includes the effects of environmental change on human and community resilience as well as ecosystem health. The position works independently, with co-workers, and with external investigators to acquire data and information required for completion of studies and programs of interest to the Reserve, the NERR System, and to regional communities.

The primary roles of the position include five principal work areas:
1. Direct, develop, and implement the Reserve's Research program
2. Educate, mentor, and supervise undergraduate and graduate students
3. Facilitate communication and collaboration among diverse local and regional coastal and estuarine scientists, natural and cultural resource managers, and decision makers
4. Participate in Research Coordinator national activities and initiatives
5. Integrate the Research Program with other Lake Superior Reserve programs

OFFICE LOCATION: Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve Offices, 14 Marina Dr., Superior, Wisconsin 54880

GEOGRAPHIC AREAS SERVED: Northwest Wisconsin and northeast Minnesota, primarily within the St. Louis River Watershed and Lake Superior Basin, including portions of Ashland, Bayfield, Douglas (WI) and St. Louis (MN) Counties

The Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve is one in a network of 29 sites around the United States and its territories that comprise the National Estuarine Research Reserve System. The Reserve is the only one located in Wisconsin, the second in the Great Lakes and the only one within the Lake Superior Biogeographical Region. The Lake Superior Reserve was designated through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and is administered through a partnership between NOAA and the Division of Extension, in collaboration with other local, state, and regional entities. The Reserve is a place-based research and education program with a special focus on the watershed of the St Louis River, the estuary, and Lake Superior's coastal system. Degree and Area of Specialization:

Required: Ph.D. in a field that relates to the responsibilities of this position

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

- Successful research project budget development and management
- Demonstrated skill in planning, implementing, and evaluating collaborative research
- Demonstrated ability to synthesize and analyze qualitative and quantitative data using statistical and visual tools/programs
- Demonstrated ability to publish in rigorous academic journals and to write technical reports

- Experience and ability to organize and work collaboratively in multi-investigator and multi-disciplinary teams including partners from tribal agencies, state and federal agencies, regional universities, private sector, and public sector entities
- Experience with and understanding of the National Estuarine Research Reserve System
- Demonstrated success developing, writing, and managing collaborative research and federal grants
- Experience designing and teaching undergraduate or graduate level courses and in training both undergraduate and graduate students

Additional Information:

This position is funded through 06/30/2020, but may be extended and/or become a renewable/permanent appointment depending on funding availability.

Involves work outdoors in a range of uncontrolled work-environment conditions including over-water and in-water work in a field setting, all weather conditions, remote settings, work at night, on platforms, in unconsolidated sediments, unstable footing, stinging insects, animals, heavy vegetation, and slopes. The work environment also exposes worker to regular public contact, vessel use, heavy machinery activity, laboratory equipment and chemical materials, and light industrial shop settings. Job involves periodic out-of-town travel, often requiring overnight stays. Job involves work at a conventional office desk workstation and may involve extended period of time at the work station.

This position is accountable to the Lake Superior Reserve Manager on all matters related to: (a) program performance and job responsibilities, (b) developing effective external working relationships with clientele groups, other agencies, departments and organizations, (c) continuing professional development (d) reporting and evaluating programs to state and federal governments, as appropriate, (e) vacation, leave of absence, salary and promotion and (f) administration, office management and performance development.

This position interacts collegially with (1) UW-Madison, UW-Superior, and other UW System units, faculty staff, and students; (2) UW-Madison's Division of Extension and appropriate Extension teams, programs, units, and centers; (3) staff at other NERR sites; (4) faculty, staff, and students at other collaborating universities; and (5) State, Federal, Municipal, Tribal, NGO, for profit, and nonprofit partners.
