Position Summary:

The large animal research facilities at UW-Madison play a central role in supporting (1) innovative, translational agricultural and biomedical research and (2) hands-on education and training of students. The large animal program seeks a highly-motivated, highly-organized and innovative facility manager to oversee a key facility and its daily operations, and to expand the capabilities and roles of the facility to support the future trajectory of research and teaching at UW-Madison. The facility manager will also play a critical role in creating and implementing operational and fiscal models that ensure future self-sustainability of the facility.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

B.S. or higher in Animal Sciences or related field. M.S. preferred.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

More than 2 years of related experience required, 3-5 years experience managing a large animal facility preferred.

Required experience includes:
- Experience in swine, cattle and goat/sheep husbandry.
- Knowledge of animal health and experience in monitoring health status.
- Knowledge of livestock animal nutrition and feed formulation.
- Personnel management, training and supervision experience.
- Budget development and/or management experience.
- Experience in facility maintenance.
- Knowledge of agricultural and biomedical animal regulatory guidelines/policies (such as USDA, OLAW, AWA, AAALAC, IACUC).
- Excellence in interpersonal communication, and presentation skills.
- Proficiency in standard computing software (including scheduling, word-processing and spreadsheet)

Preferred additional experience includes:
- Experience in livestock herd management.
- Experience in in horses, poultry and rodent species husbandry.
- Experience in biomedical use of livestock species.
- GLP or GMP record-keeping experience.
- Proficiency in database software (e.g., MS Access, FileMaker).
- Experience in teaching, training or mentoring of students.

License or Certificate:

Employee will be expected to take any courses necessary to be certified in animal care

Additional Information:

Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
