Position Summary:

This position reports to the Director of the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and will serve as both the Associate Director of the Institute and also support and conduct research with the Director in the Department of Population Health Sciences. The UW Population Health Institute (UWPHI) is located in the UW Madison School of Medicine and Public Health. It is closely affiliated with the Department of Population Health Sciences (PHS). The Institute's mission is to advance health and well-being for all by developing and promoting evidence-based approaches to health improvement through policy and practice at the local, state, and national levels. The Institute's faculty and academic staff conduct applied research and program evaluation, translate population health data into reports and searchable databases, prepare issue briefs on timely health-related topics, and produce educational programs, conferences and briefings. The work of the Institute has a high profile nationally and across Wisconsin.

The UWPHI is known for supporting action to improve health at the local, state and national levels. On campus, the Institute works to enhance the collaborative relationships of UW faculty and researchers involved in various types of population health, health care, and health policy research.

The UWPHI has an active external Advisory Board of leaders with statewide profiles and visibility, and an Executive Committee of UW faculty. UWPHI staff is comprised of more than 100 full and part-time employees including a Director; Program Directors; academic staff (including scientists, researchers, research specialists, outreach specialists, etc.) and core administrative staff members. There are also affiliated faculty, graduate student assistants and trainees/research interns. The staffing pattern is dynamic given multiple funding sources.

The position requires both research and administrative responsibilities. The position will have direct responsibility for supervising day-to-day operations of the UWPHI. The position will work closely with the Director, Program Directors and administrative staff to ensure continued growth of UWPHI programs, improved dissemination of UWPHI scholarly and practice products and enhanced climate, with specific emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion. The position will conduct independent and collaborative research as a Scientist with the Director and other faculty and staff.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

PhD or other equivalent terminal degree required in medicine, nursing, public health, epidemiology, population health, public affairs, economics, sociology, social work or related field.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Requires a minimum of 5 years of substantial leadership in health research and administration in an academic environment. Direct experience with project management, multi-disciplinary research teams, grants, contracts, and sponsored research required.

Preferred Relevant Skills and Experience:

1. Experience collaboratively managing projects within a team environment, including experience setting and trackinggoals, balancing priorities, and managing against deadlines.
2. Proven written communication skills, including the ability to summarize and interpret a wide range of research reports and results.
3. Proven verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex ideas succinctly to a wide range of audiences.
4. Ability to build and sustain external relationships and coordinate the efforts of multiple partners toward a common goal.
5. Ability to supervise research and administrative staff.
