Position Summary: |
This administrative management position is expected to provide operational oversight and project management for the National Magnetic Resonance Facility at Madison (NMRFAM) at the University of Wisconsin Department of Biochemistry. NMRFAM is a resource that aims to expand the frontiers of biomolecular NMR spectroscopy in solution and the solid state, to ease access for scientists to state-of-the-art spectroscopic methods, and to disseminate technologies broadly to the user community. The position is an integral part of the NMRFAM management team. The facility is funded by the University, the Department of Biochemistry, and a federal grant awarded to the Principal Investigator (PI) from the National Institute of Health (NIH). Several additional grants to support facility operations and development are pending at the NIH and the National Science Foundation (NSF). This position coordinates, oversees, and manages budgets and expenditures, construction and development of new NMRFAM instruments and capabilities, and progress toward the unique goals of multiple large facility grants. This position will supervise and support research center personnel and the development of lab infrastructure to support research center users. The position will also coordinate with UW-Madison finance, procurement, and grants management personnel, other national NMR centers, and NIH and other extramural funding agency program officials.

Degree and Area of Specialization: |
B.S. degree required; M.S. or Ph.D. preferred; in Biochemistry, Physical Science, Engineering or related discipline.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience: |
At least two years of experience in management of large-scale, technically complex scientific projects. Demonstrated experience in project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring/controlling, and closing is required.
Ideally, the incumbent will have: -Experience with federal grant agencies and policies, as well as university administrative rules and regulations. -Experience in leadership and management of teams of scientists, engineers and technicians in a large collaborative environment, and excellent personnel management skills. -Experience in design and implementation of systems for evaluating project progress using Earned Value Management and experience with project management software. -Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to translate highly technical scientific documents and information -Experience in the management of high-value contracts. -Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is preferred.
The successful candidate will work to continuously improve the organizational framework to ensure that all deadlines are met and be a leader in our risk management efforts to anticipate and mitigate potential problems.
