Position Summary: |
This position is part of a campus-wide cluster hiring initiative to expand and broaden expertise in quantum science and engineering at UW-Madison. As part of the initiative there is a new position vacancy in the Departments of Physics (PVL 241344), and two recently filled in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering. It is anticipated that the successful candidate in physics will develop strong collaborations with the existing quantum research at UW Madison, within the Wisconsin Quantum Institute and the HQAN and Q-Next quantum centers, as well as with other hires under this cluster program, and with external research centers. The department of Physics has strong experimental and theoretical programs in qubit devices based on neutral atoms, quantum dots, and superconductors, as well as related areas of quantum materials, quantum optics, quantum sensors, and quantum information theory. We are interested in candidates who will strengthen any of the above areas or establish related research groups.
UW-Madison is seeking a diverse set of faculty candidates who will deepen our campus’ interdisciplinary research strength in key areas of current and future research promise, as well as faculty candidates who will approach their work in a manner that advances our commitment to research excellence.

Principal Duties: |
The candidate will be expected to perform teaching, service duties, and continued high-impact scholarly research in the Department of Physics. Undergraduate and graduate classroom teaching and individual instruction as well as supervision of graduate thesis research will also be required. Professional and university service is required as appropriate.

Degree and Area of Specialization: |
Ph.D. in Physics, with specialization in theoretical or experimental quantum science, or closely related scientific field.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience: |
Tenure-track candidates are required to have a minimum of 3 years post doctoral research experience in theoretical or experimental quantum information science.
Tenure candidates must possess extensive experience and be able to demonstrate a track record of innovation and world-class research accomplishments in theoretical or experimental quantum information science broadly interpreted as research in foundations and applications of quantum mechanical phenomena to information processing, computation, simulation, metrology, or sensing. Applicants with focused experience drawing from a range of subfields including atomic, optical, condensed matter, and information theory will all be given full consideration. In addition, the candidate must possess credentials which meet the requirements for full or associate professor with tenure as determined by the Committee of the Physical Sciences Division.
