Position Summary:

African Cultural Studies (ACS) seeks to hire an Assistant Professor with expertise in ethnomusicology or sound studies. We are especially interested in scholars with research interests in South Africa, but all areas of the continent will be considered. Ability to conduct research in an African language is required; background in queer studies would be a plus. The successful candidate will offer courses in cultural expression, theory, and fieldwork, as well as introductory courses in African expressive cultures and perform department, university, and community service as appropriate.

The ideal candidate will actively engage in the intellectual life of our department with diverse geographical, theoretical, linguistic, and methodological interests, as well as embrace departmental commitments to undergraduate and graduate education and engage in significant ongoing research and publication. Principal Duties:

The successful candidate will offer courses in cultural expression, theory, and fieldwork, as well as introductory courses in African expressive cultures, conduct scholarly research, and perform department, university, and community service as appropriate for faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor. The regular teaching load is two courses per semester, and will include undergraduate and graduate courses, at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels in the candidate's field of specialization. Teaching will also involve mentoring of MA and PhD student research and directing dissertations.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology or closely related discipline is required. Research interest in South Africa is preferred.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

A successful candidates will show evidence of outstanding teaching and research potential and must be willing to teach upper and lower-level courses on a regular basis.
