Job Summary:

The Department of Medical Physics is seeking a faculty member at the assistant or associate professor level in the area of medical imaging physics with an equal balance of clinical and academic duties. This faculty member will be expected to lead an active scholarly research program that includes successfully competing for extramural funding to support them. They will work collaboratively with other medical physics and radiology faculty members and staff on new and existing projects.

The clinical support responsibilities will include providing clinical physics services in medical imaging at various local health care facilities. The faculty member will also have a role in mentoring/teaching in support of our CAMPEP accredited Imaging Physics residency program, including mentoring in its rotations, and providing instruction as needed in Medical Physics courses in our CAMPEP accredited graduate program.

The successful candidate will lead and support research projects in Medical Physics and Radiology, developing a research program of their own in medical imaging from government and/or other funding sources (approximately 40% FTE). Opportunities for industrial collaborations exist. For example, the departments of Medical Physics and Radiology currently have multiple industrial relationships with companies like GE Healthcare, Canon Medical, Hologic, Accuray, Siemens Healthineers, and Change Healthcare.

The successful candidate will provide at least 50% FTE clinical medical physics services in x-ray imaging, as a member of the UW Radiological Physics Services, in support of the imaging programs of the UW Health clinics, and associated outreach hospitals and clinics. This support will include assistance in the acquisition and acceptance testing of imaging systems and annual quality assurance testing of existing imaging systems. This also includes equipment testing and other assistance in the accreditation of imaging systems by the American College of Radiology, the Joint Commission, and MQSA requirements for mammography as a qualified medical physicist. Other clinical physics duties include the optimization of imaging protocols, and radiation safety. Many of these duties involve substantial collaborations with clinical staff.

The successful candidate will also join the faculty of the imaging physics residency program in its clinical rotations, provide instruction and training for the residents in this program, and provide teaching - for the medical physics graduate program and for the physics for radiology residents' course (approximately 10% FTE).

The successful applicant will participate in administrative and committee work to support the clinical and scholarly missions of UW Health and the School of Medicine and Public Health. An essential part of these duties will be working in a collegial relationship with other faculty members.

Terminal Degree
PhD in Medical Physics or a closely-related field is required


ABR Board certification including a specialization in Diagnostic Medical Physics is preferred, but a board eligible status will be considered, particularly if the candidate has passed Part 1 and Part 2 of the ABR exams.

Experience in providing Medical Physics support for clinical programs in x-ray medical imaging is desired. This includes familiarity in the physics evaluation and testing of x-ray medical imaging systems, including radiographic, fluoroscopic, mammographic, and CT. In addition, excellent communication skills are needed for interacting with a variety of medical imaging personnel, including other physicists, technologists, radiologists, residents, fellows, and researchers.

A record of scholarly research activity is expected. This includes publication of work in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at national/international conferences, and experience applying for extramural funding.
