Job Summary:

The Department of Pediatrics at The University of Wisconsin is recruiting an exceptional Newborn Nursery Hospitalist to join our Division of Neonatology and Newborn Nursery. We are looking for candidates with a track record of clinical excellence and academic contributions as demonstrated through training and/or practice experience. Providing clinical care, teaching, and execution of scholarly activities is expected on the CT and CHS track.

The UW Department of Pediatrics is a vibrant academic department comprising over 200 faculty in seventeen subspecialty divisions. The Department promotes and enhances the health of children through outstanding clinical care, exemplary education of pediatric trainees, performance of cutting edge research and vigorous advocacy.

The Division of Neonatology & Newborn Nursery promotes the health and well-being of the newborn. The Newborn Nursery Hospitalist Group provides preventive care, management of newborn medical problems that do not require intensive care, and breastfeeding support. Research interests include breastfeeding medicine, care of infants exposed to substances before birth, early identification of CMV, management of hypoglycemia, hyperbilirubinemia, and neonatal infections and methods of maternal-infant health care. Our mission includes education of trainees, supporting the community with opportunities for continuing education (Neonatal Resuscitation Program), and advancing the medical care of our patients via basic, clinical, and translational research. Our goals are to become a nationally recognized center for providing care that is consistent with current clinical evidence while at the same time paving the way for outstanding care in the future based upon developing innovative approaches to the care of the newborn of the 21st century.

The University of Wisconsin Department of Pediatrics continues to be a leader among pediatric departments in federal research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), according to the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research (BRIMR). The recently released 2021 rankings lists the Department of Pediatrics as No. 7 in the nation with $37.5 million in funding from the NIH. The department has continued to rise in national rankings of research dollars, up from No. 31 in 2012, and it has ranked in the top 13 for five years straight.

Responsibilities:

If hired on the CHS track:
Approximately 70-80% time will be spent in the clinical care of newborns admitted to the largest level1 nursery in the state of Wisconsin. Clinical care includes-
* Attending high risk deliveries of infants greater than 35 weeks gestational age
* Admitting, daily rounds and discharging newborns cared for on the UW Newborn Hospitalist Service.
* Providing consults for other medical groups caring for newborns at UnityPoint Health-Meriter Hospital
* Performing circumcisions and frenotomies for our patient population
Approximately 5-10% of time will be spent on teaching activities including:
* Medical education of pediatric residents, pediatric hospitalist fellows and medical students
Approximately 10-15% of time will be spent on clinical research and scholarly activities

If hired on the CT track:
Approximately 90-95% time will be spent in the clinical care of newborns admitted to the largest level1 nursery in the state of Wisconsin. Clinical care includes-
* Attending high risk deliveries of infants greater than 35 weeks gestational age
* Admitting, daily rounds and discharging newborns cared for on the UW Newborn Hospitalist Service.
* Providing consults for other medical groups caring for newborns at UnityPoint Health Hospital
* Performing circumcisions and frenotomies for our patient population

* Medical education of pediatric residents, pediatric hospitalist fellows and medical students

Qualifications:

*Completion of an ACGME-approved pediatric residency program is required.
*Experience in an academic medical setting preferred.
Candidates must possess clinical and academic credentials sufficient for appointment at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor rank at the Clinician-Teacher (CT) track or Clinical Health Sciences (CHS) track that have been previously established by UW School of Medicine and Public Health Guidelines. Appointment as Associate Professor or full Professor will require that candidate's credentials meet criteria for rank established by UW School of Medicine and Public Health Guidelines.

Clinician-Teacher (CT) track faculty provide service through the provision of patient care as their primary responsibility. Medical student and resident education within the context of the clinical practice is expected. Clinician-teacher faculty may participate in research such as through the accrual of patients to clinical trials. Service may also be part of the role of the C-T track faculty, through participation in the governance of the department and the School of Medicine and Public Health, and through medical community service.

Clinical Health Sciences (CHS) track faculty contribute to the SMPH missions through a scholarly approach to patient care, teaching and/or research.

License/certification:
*Candidate is required to have or be eligible for a Wisconsin medical licensure.
*Board certification or board eligibility in Pediatrics through the American Board of Pediatrics is required.
*Must be eligible for enrollment as a billing provider and for all necessary hospital privileges.

This vacancy is being offered on two different tracks: CHS or CT, which allows the School of Medicine and Public Health to consider clinical teacher faculty candidates with or without research credentials for this non-tenure-track position.

This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations. The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial Caregiver Check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and then every four years.
