Job Summary:

The North Temperate Lakes Long-Term Ecological Research (NTL-LTER) Project has been studying the ecology of lakes for the past 40 years as a part of the National Science Foundation's LTER network. We are seeking a research specialist to oversee the water chemistry laboratory, which produces many of the critical data sets underpinning this long-term research program. The research specialist will also contribute to the collective research goals of the NTL LTER project as a member of our dynamic limnology research team, providing analytical competency and technical leadership. Effective collaboration and communication abilities are essential. Duties would include:

[1] Laboratory Oversight and Sample Analysis: lead efforts in water sample analysis using instrumentation such as a nutrient autoanalyzer, organic carbon analyzer, ion chromatograph, and inductively coupled plasma spectrometer. Oversight also includes sample tracking, data entry, writing or updating protocols for laboratory and data entry procedures, performing routine maintenance of equipment, and maintaining chemical and equipment inventories.

[2] Quality Assurance and Data Management: Maintaining long-term data sets requires rigorous quality control measures. The incumbent will oversee quality assurance and implement quality control procedures in the lab, including bi-annual proficiency testing. They will also assist in managing project data by coordinating with NTL-LTER research staff at the Center for Limnology's Trout Lake Station in northern Wisconsin and with the NTL-LTER Information Management staff in Madison.

[3] Operational Guidance and Supervision of Staff: the incumbent will oversee hiring, training, and supervising student employees who will assist with laboratory analyses and data entry. The research specialist will also assist faculty, graduate students, and post-doctoral researchers with LTER-related water chemistry projects, including training of individual researchers as needed on equipment and methods.

[4] Additional Responsibilities: Depending on the expertise of the incumbent, additional responsibilities may include occasionally assisting the field research specialist with field sampling and aquatic organism collection, additional data management and database maintenance, or assisting with NTL LTER project management including project planning and scheduling.

Responsibilities: Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.
  • 40% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • 15% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • 15% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • 5% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
  • 20% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
  • 5% Performs literature reviews and writes reports

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
- One year of experience working in a water chemistry laboratory
- Experience operating analytical equipment for environmental sample analysis
- Knowledge of water chemistry quality assurance and quality control procedures
- Experience with at least one of the following:
o Management of laboratory data and database entry;
o Project management including hiring, planning, and scheduling; or
o Limnological sampling including use of sensors, water sample collection, and aquatic organism collection

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
