Position Summary:

This position is part of the UW Madison, School of Veterinary Medicine, Shelter Medicine Program.

Principal Duties:

Person will be responsible for working as part of the University of Wisconsin, School of Veterinary Medicine, Shelter Medicine Program on team projects involving consultations with animal shelters. Consultation work is often conducted through phone and email communication but also involves on-site visits, so ability to travel, sometimes with short notice is required. Many duties may also involve supervision and training of veterinary students, Shelter Medicine interns, and Shelter Medicine residents, sometimes taking place at Dane County Humane Society. The Shelter Medicine Outreach Veterinarian will also work on other team projects involving outreach and education including conference presentations, course presentations, and development of consultation tools and online materials. The Outreach Veterinarian will be a representative of the UW Shelter Medicine Program when working with shelters and help to build the program's reputation and trust in the field, the University, and the community.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

DVM or equivalent degree with advanced specialized training in Shelter Medicine

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

At least three years of experience working in or with animal shelters; at least one to two years of experience with outreach and consultation activities with animal shelters preferred. Proficiency in practical and tactful identification and articulation of strengths, problems and possible solutions. Ability to write reports and recommendations that will be clear to an audience with a wide range of backgrounds.

License or Certificate:

Must be eligible to obtain license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Wisconsin

Additional Information:

Candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Also must have creativity, originality, and a proven ability to initiate projects and see them to a successful completion. Must have a demonstrated ability to work well independently and collaborate in a team environment. Also must have the ability to take direction as well as the ability to provide leadership. Must be comfortable working with people of all levels of expertise and training must be extremely high.
