Position Summary:

The UW-Madison Cryo-EM initiative is a cross-campus effort to provide modern cryo-electron microscopy capabilities to UW-Madison bioscience researchers. Current equipment includes a Tecnai TF-30 with a Gatan K2 Summit direct detector, a Tecnai T12 with a Gatan OneView CMOS detector, Vitrobot plunge-freezer, RMC HP 010 high-pressure freezer, a cryo-ultramicrotome, and a Leica EM ACE600 Carbon-Coating Device. A 300 kV Titan Krios, 200 kV Talos Arctica, 120 kV Talos L120C, and an Aquilos cryo-FIB-SEM will be added in the coming months. New spaces are being renovated to house the microscopes, supporting equipment, computational workspace, and workspace for the new cryo-EM Scientist.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

PhD is required in Biophysics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

At least 3 years relevant research experience in (cryo-)electron microscopy.

The person hired must have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, a talent for collaborative research, good organizational skills, an ability to teach effectively, an ability to be self-motivated and work independently, and sufficient knowledge of the operation of modern (cryo-)electron microscopes to troubleshoot and fix minor problems and to efficiently coordinate maintenance and repair with service personnel.

Expertise in computational analysis of cryo-EM data is also required, with at least basic familiarity with both tomographic and single-particle methods.
