Position Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) is a research and development center with an international reputation for developing and supporting instrumentation for both terrestrial and space flight applications. SSEC's mission includes the support of faculty and academic staff led research, development, fabrication and implementation of space flight experiments, as well as the development of new meteorological research tools for national and international use.

This position is located in the SSEC/Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Meteorological Satellite Applications - Configuration Management & Testing Operational Area. The successful candidate will conduct research using a high-performance-data ingest, archive, and processing system as part of the Data Processing Center (DPC) for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Polar Radiant Energy in the Far InfraRed Experiment (PREFIRE) mission. The DPC is responsible for processing and reprocessing radiances, surface and atmospheric property retrieval products, and higher-level gridded datasets, providing assessment capabilities for these products, assisting the PREFIRE Science Team in developing and testing the product generation software, and delivering the products, software, browse imagery, and associated ancillary data and metadata to NASA for distribution and archive. Additional areas of responsibility include day-to-day guidance of team members, management of DPC's needs, and reporting on the operation of the DPC.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelors degree in computer science, data science, project management, or related field required. Masters preferred.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

- At least four years in a research environment with a minimum of two years of successful management experience.
- Experience with large dataset analysis and processing tools.

- Experience with scientific data formats.
- Experience with remote sensing data visualization, analysis, and processing tools.
- Working knowledge with Linux systems.
- Previous experience with high performance computing systems in a scientific research environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work well with others in a dynamic environment.

Additional Information:

A period of evaluation will be required.
A criminal background check and sexual harassment/sexual violence reference check will be required.
