ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF GENDER AND WOMEN'S STUDIES

Position Summary:

This faculty position will be academic nine-month, tenure-track appointments at the Assistant Professor level, to start August 2020. Applications at the Associate Professor level may be considered in exceptional cases. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the research, teaching, and service missions of the department. Principal duties of the position will include teaching two courses per semester at the undergraduate and graduate level. Advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students required. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct scholarly research in an area of specialization leading to publication at the national and/or the international level. University and professional service is required as appropriate. Candidates must have a Ph.D. (or other doctorate degree) by the time of appointment. Appointment is expected to begin in August 2020.

The Department of Gender and Women's Studies is accepting applications in one of the following two fields: (1) Gender and the Environment: Seeking scholars working at the intersection of gender and environmental studies. Applicants whose work focuses outside of North America are especially encouraged to apply. (2) Feminist Science/Biology: Seeking scholars who bring feminist questions and sensibility to their scientific practice. Applicants from all fields are welcome to apply but we would especially welcome candidates from the biological, psychological, anthropological, or agricultural sciences. Successful candidates in this field must demonstrate an ability to teach courses that present and interrogate biological theories of sex and gender. This position may be shared with a science department.

Principal Duties:

Responsibilities include conducting research, teaching at all levels, mentoring graduate students, and performing university and professional service as appropriate.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

PhD (or other doctoral degree, e.g., DrPH, DNP) prior to start of appointment required. Applicants should be specialized in Gender and the Environment OR in Feminist Science/Biology. Applicants working on Gender and the Environment may have their degree in one of social science disciplines. Those working on Feminist Science/Biology may have a degree in the biological, psychological, anthropological, or agricultural sciences.

We are open to a variety of disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and methodological approaches, but engagement with feminist scholarship is required. Formal training in Gender and Women's Studies is a plus.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Teaching experience preferred and demonstrated potential for research excellence is required.

Appointment at the associate level requires evidence of excellence in scholarly research, teaching and service and requires review by the Tenure Committee at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
