The University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks a nationally-recognized leader in university outreach and engagement to serve as Dean and Director for the Division of Extension, one of the primary agencies through which the university exercises its commitment to the `Wisconsin Idea,' the principle that the many benefits of the university must be used to transform lives and communities throughout the State of Wisconsin and beyond. The Division of Extension reaches nearly one million people annually on issues including agriculture, community development, natural resources, family living, nutrition, youth development, and health and well-being, and constantly is seeking to develop new ways of connecting university research with community-based needs. The Dean will report to the Provost through the Vice Provost for Extension and Public Media, and will be responsible for providing creative, inspiring leadership to more than 700 faculty and staff located in 72 county offices, 5 tribal nations and several University of Wisconsin System campuses. The Dean will oversee an annual budget of approximately $80 Million.
This search comes at an exciting time for the Division of Extension. A comprehensive reorganization is nearly completed, equipping the Division to respond more effectively to emerging challenges through program areas organized into the following centers: Agriculture, Natural Resources, Communities, Health and Well-Being, and Youth and Families. In addition, after nearly 50 years as part of a separate unit within the University of Wisconsin System, the Division has been reunited with the UW-Madison, broadly recognized as one of the premier research universities in the world and one of the country's leading land-grant institutions. Active conversations are underway to identify new opportunities for collaboration around important issues to the State of Wisconsin and the nation, including topics like water quality, opioid abuse, racial and ethnic equity, and fostering a climate of increased entrepreneurship. This environment is rich with possibilities for further innovative leadership, and strong candidates must not only have significant leadership experience with university outreach and Extension, but also an established track record of managing through moments of significant institutional change.

Demonstrated familiarity with university outreach and the fundamental mission of a land-grant institution, including sensitivity to the educational needs of both traditional and non-traditional audiences and the relationship between campus-based research and statewide Extension programs
Ability to lead faculty and staff in efforts to demonstrate the scholarly value and measurable impacts of Extension education
Management-level experience in an Extension program
Significant leadership experience in large, complex organizations, including oversight of budgeting, human resources, communications, external partnerships and governmental relations
Demonstrated familiarity with managing through moments of significant institutional change
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity in the workplace, and to incorporating these principles into educational programming in order to meet the needs of all potential stakeholders and clients, including racial/ethnic minorities, women, LGBTQ+ and persons with disabilities
Willingness to make difficult, evidence-based decisions
Ability to work effectively and collegially with a broad spectrum of partner organizations, including units of local, tribal, state and federal governments and their elected leaders
Demonstrated success in developing and cultivating external funding sources
