Position Summary:

The Department is known nationwide for its rigor, dedicated faculty, and accomplished students and alumni. This position offers the opportunity to work within an internationally known 2D program that integrates comprehensive technical training with a rigorous critical approach to the material.

Principal Duties:

- Teach a load of 2 classes and 1 section of graduate independent study per semester to undergraduate and graduate students from across the Department (Non-Majors, Certificate, Majors: BA, BFA, MA, and MFA) in undergraduate and graduate level courses and special topics in a wide range/variety of 2D art practices.
- Serve on graduate committees with MA and MFA candidates and advise and mentor graduate students within an interdisciplinary Art Department.
- Provide leadership, mentoring, and guidance to students.
- Demonstrate an active commitment to the continued growth and development of the undergraduate and graduate program and community.
- Work collegially in a four-person 2D area to maintain and supervise all aspects of the 2D area within a large and vibrant Art Department.
- Build and maintain a studio practice at a nationally recognized level, at a level that will meet tenure expectations at a research institution.
- Participate in service activities at the local, state, and national level as well as the University.
- Meet the teaching, research, and service expectations of the department and university.

Courses taught might include: Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced Painting, Life Drawing, Intermediate and Advanced Drawing and Color. The successful candidate should be a practicing artist who will contribute to the intellectual and academic life of the department through Research, Teaching and Service within a vibrant art department of 29 faculty members. The position offers the opportunity to work with the Kohler Art Library artist?s book collection. The desire and ability to interface with all areas of the Art Department is a significant facet of the position. The successful candidate must meet the teaching, research, and service expectations of the department and university.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Candidate must hold an MFA degree in Art with a specialization 2D/Painting and Drawing.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks an artist who explores contemporary issues in painting, is actively exhibiting and demonstrates teaching abilities with an interest in pedagogical excellence within intermediate and advanced undergraduate and MFA programs. Candidates must demonstrate both critical and technical knowledge in their work and teaching. The successful candidate will have a strong background across painting modalities and have the ability to integrate theoretical, material, practical, and social issues into studio teaching. Candidates with hybrid practices or additional expertise in other media are encouraged to apply. The ability to engage with a multidisciplinary Art Department is a significant aspect of this position.

College level teaching experience is preferred. Candidates with new or anticipated MFA degrees must have research under way that demonstrates results through exhibitions and/or publications and should have presentation skills that suggest future excellence in teaching.

We seek candidates with outstanding professional accomplishments who can show evidence of teaching capabilities at the undergraduate and graduate levels. A well-rounded understanding of both historical precedents and contemporary theory and practice is required for this position along with a desire to expand the boundaries of the medium. Candidates should demonstrate experience working with diverse populations..
