| Position Summary: |
This position will function independently and be knowledgeable in rodent handling and rodent research techniques. This position will be responsible for performing routine animal husbandry tasks and assisting with mouse colony/breeding procedures for the Biomedical Research Model Services (BRMS) Mouse Breeding Colony. These duties include general animal husbandry, feeding and watering animals, monitoring animal room environments, cleaning primary and secondary enclosures, receiving animals, transporting animals, restraining and handling animals, reporting sick and injured animals, general facility maintenance and housekeeping. ART positions interact with investigators and veterinary staff as required. Other duties to be assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
-At least 1 year of animal care experience
-Physical ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, squat, twist and push carts, bedding, feed bags and equipment up to 50 lbs.
-Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
-Planning, organizational and communication skills.
-Proficient computer skills, experience with Excel and Microsoft word.
-Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications:
-Knowledge of acceptable animal husbandry procedures.
-Familiarity with or ability to learn University requirement concerning Responsible Use and Care of Animals in Research and Training and the Guide to the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
-Knowledge of animal health records maintenance and ability to perform animal health checks.
-Knowledge of micro-isolator techniques and associated contamination control and sanitation.
-Knowledge of data entry for breeding and research study records.
-Ability to work in a complex mouse colony with many difficult strains of genetically modified mice while paying special attention to details on mouse identification cards and record keeping. Proper identification of mice is essential.

| License or Certificate: |
American Association for Laboratory Animals Science (AALAS) Certification at the Assistant Laboratory Technician (ALAT) or Laboratory Animals Technologist (ALAT) level preferred.
Must possess a valid driver's license that meets standards of UW Risk Management in order to operate University vehicles.
