Position Summary:

The Assistant Director of Parking Services is responsible for the coordination and administration of an array of transportation-related services for the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus community which includes approximately 60,000 faculty, staff, and students and over 4.6 million visitors annually. Working under the general supervision of the Director of Parking Operations, the assistant director will take a leadership role in providing exceptional customer service and proactive, coordinated communication on behalf of the Transportation Services department. Will oversee the customer service, special events and marketing and communications team. Transportation Services has an annual budget more than $22 million. The assistant director provides leadership and direction for the department on campus parking operations issues, manages the resources, staff and budget of the department, and is responsible for policy and staff development, departmental communications, and coordination of departmental activities with customers of Transportation Services.

The Assistant Director is responsible for managing the external operations of the department to ensure efficient access to and through the University as well as communicating this information to the campus community. This position provides leadership and management guidance to departmental staff and ensures that transportation policies support the needs of the campus administration and other users, including student groups, neighbors of the University, vendors, coordinators of large conferences and conventions, and other customers. Primary duties include the management of special event parking, customer service and permit management, marketing/communications, and departmental policies.

The UW-Madison campus is comprised of over 900 acres of picturesque grounds located on the shores of Lake Mendota. The campus is bounded on the east and south by the City of Madison and on the west by the village of Shorewood Hills. The location of the campus, the need to develop within the existing campus boundaries, the desire to preserve open space and the numbers of people accessing the campus daily contribute to this being one of the more complex transportation/parking systems in the Midwest. The campus has over 25 million gross square feet of building space and offers a broad array of undergraduate, graduate, professional, research and advanced academic programs. The UW-Madison is the flagship university in the 26 campus University of Wisconsin System and one of the nation's largest and most productive research institutions in higher education, receiving over $1.3 billion dollars in research expenditures annually.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in business, public administration, or related field required. Advanced degree strongly preferred.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Five+ years experience managing complex parking/transportation programs.

Applicant must possess demonstrated:
- Leadership and team-building skills
- Advanced knowledge of urban planning or transportation planning and best practices
- Political acumen in understanding and negotiating organizational complexity
- Short- and long-term budget forecasting
- Advanced project management experience
- Exceptional communication, customer service, and collaboration skills

License or Certificate:

Certified Administrator of Public Parking is desirable.

2. Understanding of the increasing complexity of academic/research facilities in institutions of higher education.

12. Ability to work hours outside the normal working schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
13. Ability to effectively handle difficult customer situations with appropriate conflict resolution skills.
14. Computer proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

This position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Typical hours are Monday-Friday from 7:30am-4:30pm with the ability to work hours outside the normal working schedule, including nights, weekends and holidays.
