Position Summary:

The primary duties and responsibilities include those related to a leadership position in the Pathology and Professional Veterinary Services section dedicated to professional veterinary and diagnostic pathology services and pathology sciences for the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (WVDL). This position also serves as back up to the Director. The incumbent will be the Section Head and provide intellectual and practical working knowledge involving diagnostic veterinary pathology and pathology sciences. The WVDL is committed to and expects the incumbent to contribute to continued improvement in the diversity of our team and to support our core values of respect, integrity, trust, and accountability.

In carrying out these responsibilities, the incumbent will supervise and direct professional, doctoral and technical staff in performance of diagnostic veterinary diagnosis and pathology, histology, transmissible spongiform encephalopathy, and necropsy. As back-up to the director, this position will assist with National Animal Health Laboratory (NALHN) duties and activities as directed in collaboration with the WVDL NAHLN Coordinator. Other duties related to this leadership position with supervisory responsibilities include active involvement in our laboratory quality system, performance evaluations, recruitment, and training and education of staff.

In addition to holding regular section meetings, the Section Head is an active participant on the WVDL Administrative Team which includes supervisors, other WVDL section heads, and administrative staff, and takes on other work and projects as needed.

This position directly supervises nine professional and doctoral staff and indirectly supervises nine technical staff. One pathology position is at our Barron facility and the incumbent will be expected to travel to Barron to facilitate leadership and management of diagnostic necropsy in Barron. This position works under the general supervision and the scientific direction of the WVDL Director.

This position will hold an adjunct appointment within the Department of Pathobiological Sciences in the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM). Information about this process will be made available to interested candidates.

Principal Duties:


This Section Head position is responsible for the oversight, management, and mentoring of professional veterinary staff that includes diagnostic pathologists and client services veterinarians. This position is also responsible for the Pathology Sciences staff, which includes a Pathology Sciences Supervisor who supervises necropsy technical staff, histology, and transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) diagnostics. Provide oversight and management of resources necessary for gross pathology, biopsy tissue microscopy, toxicology of pathogens and/or diseases of domestic livestock, wildlife, and companion animals. Prioritize the initiation or development of new technologies or test procedures.

Management of section personnel includes staff development and training, performance evaluations, necropsy floor work schedules including the management of the Madison and Barron necropsy and biopsy services, recruitment, evaluation of equipment purchases, policy development and expectations, and cost analysis of test procedures. Monitor caseload to develop strategic plans for staffing, expansion or contraction of services. Coordinate the efforts of pathologists, histology preparation, necropsy staff, toxicology, ancillary laboratory services, TSE/IHC slide reading interpretation coordination, and generation of reports that meet customer needs. Direct the Environmental Monitoring program for necropsy, including swab sites, establishing sentinel organisms, cleaning and disinfection protocols.

Ensure reliable and timely diagnostic testing results within our robust quality system and the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) Accreditation. Cross section collaboration is important for day-to-day operations and to foster a strong team-based mentality and culture. Collaboration is also important for staff between the Madison and Barron laboratories.
Client communication is of high importance for exceptional customer service and maintenance of our outstanding reputation for quality and as a valued partner to Wisconsin veterinarians, public health, and the agricultural industries.

Participate in a regular rotation, with minimum service of 1 day per month, as a diagnostic pathologist responsible for gross necropsy, microscopic examination of tissue sections, identification of cases needing additional or more sophisticated test procedures, investigation of forensic or medical/legal cases, and identification of potential foreign or reportable disease. Generate accurate and timely case reports. Provide consultative and interpretive services to practicing veterinarians. Identify case material of value to teaching and research activities of WVDL personnel and SVM faculty.


Act as the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) administrative back-up to the WVDL Director. Maintain day to day operations in the absence of the WVDL Director. Participate as an administrative core team member for strategic and fiscal decisions for the WVDL.

Although the majority of this position is rooted in leadership and management, significant opportunity is available at the WVDL, UW School of Veterinary Medicine, and the UW in general for scholarly activity. These include basic and applied research, teaching and outreach. Publication and involvement in local, national, and international scientific groups is encouraged. These activities are considered for purposes of professional development and satisfaction.

Stakeholder engagement is important with producer groups and agribusiness and this position will collaborate with WVDL team and SVM colleagues to strengthen ties with stakeholders. Coordinate development of applied research within the laboratory and with collaborators at the School of Veterinary Medicine or other UW campuses. Establish goals for publication in referred journals and presentation of information at national meetings.


Acknowledge documents, perform document reviews, and write or revise documents as assigned; complete and acknowledge training as required; initiate non-conformances, participate and leads in CAR/PAR activities and problem solve as part of the improvement process; monitor controls for tests performed and maintain quality control records; maintain records for duties assigned.


Oversee staff training and records of training; review internal and external competency and proficiency programs; review and evaluate quality control (QC) data and test results for completeness and validity; ensure that the QC data is acceptable before approving test results; maintain QC records, lead supervisor and lead workers in their quality duties; facilitate completion of remedial, corrective and preventative actions for the section, including follow up, verification and trending; plan and evaluate test qualification activities. Management and continual process improvement of environmental monitoring program.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

DVM or equivalent veterinary medical degree with 5 years of veterinary diagnostic laboratory experience or relevant work experience, and board certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists is required; MS, MBA, MPH or Ph.D. degree in related field is desirable though not required.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Significant experience and demonstrated interest, aptitude, and capability in mammalian and avian diagnostic pathology, disease investigation, and in the interpretation of diagnostic test results are required. Additional skills and experience with evidenced based science and hypothesis driven research is preferable.

Substantial experience with supervision and/or leadership of veterinary necropsy and biopsy services or equivalent experience is preferred.

The incumbent must possess excellent leadership and management skills, oral and written communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to work with colleagues, technical and professional staff, and laboratory customers in a collegial and respectful manner.

License or Certificate:

License to practice Veterinary Medicine in the State of Wisconsin (or eligibility to obtain) is desirable though not required.

Additional Information:

The Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (WVDL) is a high volume laboratory that provides a broad range of veterinary diagnostic testing services. The WVDL is accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) and is a NALHN Level 1 laboratory as a part of our national defense against livestock disease disasters. The principal objective is to provide animal disease testing services for export, regulatory requirements, infectious disease surveillance and clinical consultation to veterinarians and stakeholders of the WVDL.

The WVDL works closely with an array of professional entities including the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA); the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protections, Division of Animal Health (DATCP); the National Wildlife Health Center (USGS); the Division of Public Health of the Department of Health Services (DHS); the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR): the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH); the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM); the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD); and the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA). These alliances provide for cooperation and information transfer as each organization pursues its mission. A significant part of WVDL's work involves surveillance testing for the USDA and DATCP, as well as extensive testing for the national livestock genetics industry, much of which is located in Wisconsin. The WVDL has laboratories located in Madison and Barron, Wisconsin.
