Job Summary:

Person will be responsible for working as part of the University of Wisconsin, School of Veterinary Medicine, Shelter Medicine Program on team projects involving consultations with animal shelters. Consultation work is often conducted through phone and email communication but also involves onsite visits, so ability to travel, sometimes with short notice is required. Many duties may also involve supervision and training of veterinary students, Shelter Medicine interns, Shelter Medicine residents, and veterinary and shelter fellows.

The Shelter Medicine Outreach Veterinarian will also work on other team projects involving outreach, education, and research, including conference presentations, course presentations, and development of consultation tools, online materials, and research publications.

The Outreach Veterinarian will be a representative of the UW Shelter Medicine Program when working with organizations and help to build the program's reputation and trust in the field, the University, and the community.

Terminal Degree
DVM (or equivalent) is required; with advanced specialized training in Shelter Medicine.


At least three years of experience working in or with animal shelters and/or community medicine; at least one to two years of experience with outreach and consultation activities with animal shelters preferred. Proficiency in practical and tactful identification and articulation of strengths, problems and possible solutions. Ability to write reports and recommendations that will be clear to an audience with a wide range of backgrounds.


Must be eligible to obtain license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Wisconsin and/or home state, if remote

Additional Information:

Candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Also must have creativity, originality, and a proven ability to initiate projects and see them to a successful completion. Must have a demonstrated ability to work well independently and collaborate in a team environment. Also must have the ability to take direction as well as the ability to provide leadership. Must be comfortable working with people of all levels of expertise and training must be extremely high. Remote candidates are encouraged to apply but a preference may be given to applicants living near Madison, WI.
