The University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Geography (www.geography.wisc.edu) is seeking to hire a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Cartographic Design and Geographic Visualization. The position is a 9-month academic appointment, with standard opportunities for summer salary, and will begin on or after August 2022. A Ph.D. in Geography, Cartography, or allied field is required at the time of appointment. We welcome candidates who can contribute to an inclusive environment, bring new perspectives on mentoring and educating students from diverse backgrounds, and value collegiality and collaboration.
The successful candidate will establish a nationally recognized research program in cartography and design, adding departmental expertise in areas such as thematic map design techniques, science communication, narrative cartography and data journalism, digital and visual humanities, terrain representation and raster cartography, participatory and community-engaged map design, or social science methods and user studies in cartography. The successful candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate classes, sharing a large-enrollment introductory cartography course and contribute specialized classes to our undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. The successful candidate will participate in department and campus service committees at levels commensurate with career stage expectations.

The Department of Geography at UW-Madison has been a top-ranked program for the last century and has a longstanding tradition of excellence and robust support network for Cartography. UW-Madison Geography offers BA/BS and MS thesis degrees in Cartography & GIS in addition to Geography degrees and four professional degrees through the GIS Professional Programs. Collaboration opportunities exist with Cartography-facing units within Geography, including the History of Cartography Project, the Robinson Map Library, the State Cartographer's Office, and the Cartography Lab.
