University Research Park (URP), a nonprofit affiliate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is currently searching for a talented professional to join its team in a newly created position as Facilities and Laboratory Project Manager. The Facilities and Laboratory Project Manager will work closely with both tenants and other URP staff to deliver facilities and spaces capable of meeting the programmatic needs of University Research Park's technology, research, and science-oriented tenants.
The successful candidate must be able to independently liaise with University Research Park tenants and potential tenants to assess their programmatic requirements and assess URP's ability to meet them. Early on, this individual will be particularly involved with understanding, managing, and developing the capabilities of URP's latest development project, Element Labs, and will become a building expert for tenants in that project. This individual will support URP facility and asset management across the portfolio by helping to maintain and operate real estate assets.
In addition, The Facilities and Laboratory Project Manager will work more broadly with tenants and URP vendors including architects, engineers, and contractors to assess URP capabilities (when necessary) and to develop plans and project budgets for specific improvements and construction projects. These customers often have a variety of specialized lab-related requirements, especially HVAC. The Facilities and Laboratory Project Manager will have familiarity or develop general knowledge about technical requirements for labs such as familiarity with BioSafety level requirements, cGMP practices, building and fire code issues related to laboratories, operational requirements of basic laboratory equipment, and laboratory safety practices. The Facilities and Laboratory Project Manager will develop policy proposals to enhance safety, regulatory compliance, operational performance, or financial performance of URP facilities.
||Manages high-priority, large project(s) or multiple projects simultaneously from start to finish, impacting the institution at-large or multiple institutions.
- 15% Creates a project plan, monitors progress and performance against the project plan, and identifies, resolves, or escalates risks and issues
- 35% Manages the activities of outside contractors to ensure they are integrated into the project and that the organization receives satisfactory standards of service
- 15% Facilitates the estimation of project costs, resources, and time required to complete the assigned phase of a project and monitors activities, negotiates for resources, and assigns tasks to ensure these targets are met. Follows established change control processes if targets can no longer be met
- 5% Prepares regular reports to communicate the status of the project within and beyond the project team
- 10% Sets priorities, allocates tasks, and collaborates with project staff to meet project targets and milestones
- 5% Serves as the unit (University Research Park) liaison to external stakeholder groups (University Research Park tenants and vendors) regarding facility capabilities and facility/programmatic needs
- 5% Develops, directs, and implements architectural, engineering, and construction projects
- 5% Develops policies and procedures to enhance safety, compliance with applicable regulatory codes, operational performance, or financial performance of laboratory facilities
- 5% Coordinates capital improvement and/or tenant improvement projects with other University Research Park functional areas such as real estate development, leasing, or accounting

Experience managing facility projects such as working with architects, engineers, and contractors to construct and/or maintain facilities and mechanical systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, etc.)
Experience managing facilities in laboratory or HVAC-intensive manufacturing or process environment.
An understanding of how various scientific programs affect facility requirements. For example, the differing facility implications comparing cell biology performed in a biosafety cabinet and chemistry performed in a fume hood.
