Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Journalism and Mass Communication seeks a full-time Assistant Professor beginning August 21, 2023, with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in mass communication research and teaching and an emphasis on media, race, and ethnicity.

The successful candidate will work to proactively support the expansion of diversity in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and contribute to an inclusive, fair, and equitable environment.

Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in mass communication, which includes the following existing undergraduate courses: JOUR162 Mass Media in Multicultural America, and JOUR562 Mass Media and Minorities. They would also teach our graduate seminar JOUR824 - Race, Ethnicity and Media, as well as develop courses based on their supplementary areas of expertise. In addition to developing and maintaining a robust research portfolio, the successful applicant will mentor highly motivated master's and doctoral students in this area of high demand and societal impact. The standard teaching load is four courses per academic year, typically including one graduate seminar per year. University and professional service is required appropriate to career stage.

Additional Information:

We seek to strengthen our cutting-edge research, teaching, and practice concerning issues of media, race, and ethnicity, in and across local and global contexts. We seek an assistant professor with a clearly articulated research profile and teaching agenda in communication concerning race and ethnicity. We are particularly interested in scholars studying one or more of the following issues: representation and underrepresentation in media; class and racial disparities in media access and adoption; digital media and racial justice activism; race, ethnicity, and the public sphere; race and journalism; health inequities and access gaps; race in marketing communication; racial biases in social media algorithms, and race and ethnicity in digital and social media spaces.

The successful candidate will join a community of productive scholars who value a wide variety of conceptual, methodological, and analytical perspectives. Our current faculty members' interests include media psychology and sociology; political communication; health communication; law, history and ethics of mass media; media ecologies and journalism studies; international communication; communication and neuroscience; computational communication science; media studies of race and gender; and new media technologies. These faculty members are also involved in teaching an innovative undergraduate curriculum and oversee one of the nation's top graduate programs. The University of Wisconsin-Madison is home to one of the oldest schools of journalism and mass communication in the public universities and enjoys outstanding intellectual resources, teaching and research laboratories, and multiple sources of research support. In 2022, UW-Madison ranked eighth in the world for communication and media studies, and top five in the U.S. The School of Journalism and Mass Communication offers leading doctoral, master's, and undergraduate programs.

The School houses the Center for Communication and Democracy, the Center for Journalism Ethics, the Mass Communication Research Center, the Center for Communication and Civic Renewal, and the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism.
